Today marks exactly one week until the Historic Inauguration of President Barack H. Obama!! I am totally excited about this remarkable time, and I have so much to do to prepare for my trip to DC. For those of you who plan to be there, I really hope you have already lined up your list of events, because many of the events are selling out fast! Here is a good checklist that I am working to that I think would be beneficial for each of you!
1. Formal Wear - Most of the worthwhile events over the week will be formal attire, so you need to be in the malls today trying to pick over the scraps to find your outfit for the nights. I purchased my tuxedo a couple weeks ago, and just got it back from my local tailor to make it fit as best as it can be. I still regret not getting my Hong Kong tailor to create a Made to Measure piece for me, but it was crunch time to get something! I'm still undecided whether I want to buy new shoes for the occasion, but I have time...
2. Transportation - If you are traveling form the south, good luck getting into the city! They are closing most bridges that connect VA to DC, so the best option is to take the Metro. Prepare to spend alot of time in the metro station, because the line to get a farecard will be Crazy! Thank goodness I purchased my farecard in advance, and if you are willing to take the chance, try to get yours in advance as well. there is no guarantee that you will get it before you leave your original destination, but they have some really cool Obama commemorative farecards that you can keep as a souvenir.
3. Dinner - Everything under the sun is getting booked for dinners, so try now to get your name on a list somewhere! You might as well kill time by eating while you wait for the 5 million folks to leave the Downtown mall on Tuesday. Try Opentable and see what restaurants have availabilities.
4. Be in Shape! You will definitely have to walk at least one mile on Inauguration Day, so take time this week to do some cardio to get yourself in as much shape as possible. You will also be standing for at least 6 hours in addition to walking at least a mile, so be prepared! No glass bottles are allowed, so stock up on your Fiji water!
5. Rest Up! With such a large crowd, you need to be as alert as possible, so make sure you get enough rest just in case you need to duck and run. The news has said that Homeland Security doesn't forecast any security threats, but we all know that when one person runs.. we ALL run!
6. Have an Evacuation Plan - This goes with #5! Cell phones will have a hard time working on Tuesday, so walkie-talkies might be another way of communication. If you know the DC area, you may want to come up with a meeting place just in case you lose the people you come with!
