Q Tip: Staple vs. Style: The Polo Shirt

Staple - The fashion definition is a necessity to any wardrobe, such as "the little black dress" for women, or a basic black suit for men.

Food staples are things like milk, sugar and bread... things every home cannot go without

So, is the polo shirt a staple or a style? I argue that it is indeed a staple - a must have in every man's wardrobe... But does it make you a "stylish lad"? Not really...

If anyone knows about the necessity of a polo shirt, it would be the inhabitant of Avenue Swank himself. I have so many (some argue I have an addiction) Lacoste and Burberry polo shirts that I don't even bother looking in those sections of the store unless I know there is another color that came out this season. They are simple, easy, and comfortable - not to mention necessary in the summer for work. But, the polo shirt, no matter what designer name is on the tag, is not what makes me a style icon (or at least on my way to becoming one). Polo shirts are becoming so cliché, that I try to stay away from wearing them on most casual occasions... its hard to ignore those little Crocodiles and Prorsum horses as they stare color-coordinated at me from the closet (they're like my own little zoo), but I try my hardest to demonstrate style in other ways. There is no effort in wearing a polo and jeans (even "poppin' the collar" doesn't help), and when you step outside, you will find at least 1 in every 4 men wearing one.

On those days when you can't resist the feeling any longer and must pull out the polo, please follow these rules:

1. The polo must FIT! The shoulder seam needs to be at your shoulders! If you don't want to throw out (or give away) the polos you wore back when it was cool to wear baggy clothes, then take them to a tailor and let them take it in for you.

2. Wear a v-neck shirt underneath. Some days you may only have a crew neck undershirt clean, but try not to wear those. It distracts from the way a polo shirt is supposed to be worn.

3. Plain is best. You can do the horizontal stripes, but other designs are too distracting, and way too much for this classic shirt.

4. Don't spend alot of money on them just because... Really, they aren't that exclusive anymore that you need to spend big bucks on buying them. Anyone and everyone wears them, so save your money and buy a nice suit.

Tell me what you think. Is the polo shirt a staple or a trend? Leave comments!!
