JUNETEENTH!

Today marks Juneteenth, an observation of the date in which slaves in Texas were informed of their freedom. The Emancipation Proclamation was signed on September 22, 1852, with an effective date of January 1, 1863. It wasn't until June 19, 1865 that slaves in Galveston, Texas were informed that slavery was over due to the arrival of Union General Gordon Granger and his 2000 troops who came to take over the region and force the Emancipation. Three and a half years! So, you can imagine that this moment had a huge impact on that region. You can read more about Juneteenth here.
