Fashion Flashback: Whitley Gilbert from A Different World

Remove the chain belt, and this is straight from Chanel...

How many of you remember watching A Different World, the Cosby Show spinoff back in the late 80's/early 90's, and thinking "if college is like this, I can't wait to go!"? The series did depict a somewhat accurate picture of what college consists of, and the same issues they had back then, are still evident in college life today. What strikes me the most about that show's longevity, is the fashion sense of the character of Whitley Gilbert.

Whitley, played by actress Jasmine Guy, was a Southern Belle Fashionista from Richmond, Virginia who came from a thoroughbred of successful individuals, and she made sure to remind you in every episode. Watching the reruns now everyday, I notice that Whitley was throwing out names like Saks, Yves Saint Laurent, and Prada back then, which wasn't normal in those days. Now, I can attest that Saks didn't come to the Richmond area until 2002, but in any event, her style was chic, couture, and very relevant to today's fashion. Unlike the other characters who wore the classic styles of that day, such as Jordan's (before they were retros), acid washed jeans, fanny packs (RIP Fanny Pak from ABDC), etc. She kept a luxurious, classic style which highly contributes to its uninterrupted relevance. This should be a testimony to the point that you should construct your wardrobe to 25% trend, and 75% classic style... saves you money and ridicule if you continue to wear your trendy clothes past its "in style" date (i.e. skull shirts).

  1. She was quite the fashionista! Once I got older, I realized that her accent was a little over-the-top for Richmond. At any rate, what college-bound little girl didn't want to have Whitley Gilbert's fashion sense, or at least her wallet!
