QTip: The Perfect Powersuit

A good friend of mine requested my help on finding the perfect Powersuit for her upcoming interviews, and I thought I would share my rules to the Ave. A powersuit is a well tailored suit that's matched with a fitted dress shirt and pumps. The term powersuit can have a sexist tone behind it, because the suit is the female version of what men wear in corporate America. Leaving skirts and dresses aside, the Powersuit separates the men from the boys, or in this case, the men from the equally competent women.

1. No round lapels.. make sure they are the traditional lapel. Power suits are all about straight lines.

2. Only 2 or 3 buttons... I'm a huge fan of the 2 button suit. 1 buttons are cool. but not for power suits.

3. You can do a wide leg pant since you are going to be wearing high heels. Be careful about cuffs in the pants, try to stay away from it if possible. At least nothing over a 1 inch cuff.

4. Gray or Navy.. I am a huge fan of Navy with pinstripes.. If you cant find that, then go with a nice grey, or a black WITH PINSTRIPES. Solid Black should be your last resort

5. Pants must have pockets... it looks cheap and less powerful when the pants don't have pockets...

6. Use a tailor! This rule is just as important to you ladies is it is to us guys. Find a good tailor in your area and use them to ensure the perfect fit for your suit.

If you need inspiration, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic and Nordstrom are good places to start. Brooks Brothers is also the perfect store if you are willing to spend $600-$800 for a suit. If you want to flaunt your level of Swank, then of course you can check out St. John and Armani.
