Michelle Obama Fashion: Obama's Address to Congress

First Lady Michelle Obama wore a plum Narcisso Rodriguez dress with high waist and silk top, keeping it simple in shape, as the skirt of the dress was the perfect structure for her body type. Since she has curves, its good to have heavier fabrics, to cover areas that maybe shouldn't be shown on TV. Had the dress been of that silk on the top and bottom, it would have laid at the small of the back, accentuating her curves.. This may be nice for a Beyonce video, but not so much for a Presidential Address to congress.

On the other hand, there is no fluid cohesion between the fabrics in this dress. It almost looks as if she tucked the top into a skirt. I think the same effect of the sleeves could have been executed with the heavier fabric, and would have actually been more commendable from a designer point of view to be able to turn a heavier fabric into that type of detail.

Again, like with the Inaugural gown, this dress had an initial "wow factor" but after careful review, I have to say that it wasn't a grand slam for the First Lady. Her face and hair is SMASHING though... she is scoring big time with her hair, and has been for a while.

  1. I totally agree with your assessment of our First Lady's choice of dress. While she did look great, as she always does, I couldnt help but wonder if she thought she was on her way to Love the Club! To me, the dress was a bit much for this type of event, and I think a nice designer suit would have been more appropriate. I think she may be starting to take this 'high fashion hype' a bit too far..I did love the color though!
