Black History in Fashion: Donyale Luna

When asked who was the first Black supermodel, many names may come to mind, but one name is to never be forgotten; Donyale Luna. Born in Detroit by the name name of Peggy Anne Freeman in 1945, Donyale electrified the fashion world, taking the European market by storm. She was known to wear a blond wig and colored contacts, and known to hardly ever wear shoes. She was the muse for Yves Saint Laurent and Paco Rabanne, and was a staple in many of Andy Warhol's productions.

Donyale was the FIRST Black to appear on the cover of any Vogue magazine production. Her cover was for the March 1966 British issue, and has to be one of the most iconic poses to date. Here are some photos of Luna that show her versatility, eccentricity, and beauty.
